A Patient’s Story of Gratitude and Hope

MS patient with neurologist at Minneapolis Clinic of Neurology

Every Step is a Gift

When Julie Serlin moved from Milwaukee to Minneapolis in 2002, she was already living with a multiple sclerosis diagnosis. Finding the right care wasn’t just about convenience—it was about trust, connection, and longevity.

“I wanted what I didn’t have before,” Julie said. “My previous neurologist was very direct and cold. Here, it was different. They listened. They took time to understand me. I never felt rushed, no matter how busy they were.”

That difference kept her coming back to the Minneapolis Clinic of Neurology (MCN) for over 20 years.

“When someone takes the time to listen, you want to take the time to go.”

A Journey Built on Trust

Julie’s journey wasn’t simple. After moving, she met with a few different physicians before finding the right long-term fit.

“I knew this wasn’t going away,” she said. “I needed a place—and a person—I could be committed to. Because this is the doctor I see more than anyone else.”

Her persistence paid off. Today, she’s walking, living fully, and continuing to receive care that helps her stay stable.

“When I was diagnosed, they said I’d be in a wheelchair in ten years. I guess I showed them,” Julie said with a laugh. “That was over 20 years ago.”

The Value of Listening and Asking Questions

Julie believes that being an active participant in her care is key. She encourages others to ask questions, understand their treatment, and advocate for themselves.

She shared a few questions every patient should ask their neurologist:

  • How often should I see you?
  • Why are you recommending this treatment?
  • How do my results compare to others at my stage?
  • What are my options if this medication doesn’t work?
  • When should I call if something changes?

“You are your best advocate,” Julie said. “They’re your physician, but you owe yourself the time and effort to ask questions. They’re here for you, but you need to take care of yourself too.”

Staying Open to New Possibilities

In 2019, Julie became the first patient in Minnesota to start a new MS treatment offered by her neurologist at MCN.

“I was the first one to raise my hand,” she said. “I love that there’s always an opportunity to try something new. My goal isn’t a cure—it’s stability. And if I can stay stable, that’s a gift.”

For Julie, the clinic’s openness to innovation and personal connection is what sets it apart.

The Power of Being Seen Sooner

Julie’s story highlights the importance of access—getting care when it’s needed most.

She has seen firsthand how the Be Seen Sooner initiative at MCN has shortened appointment times for new patients, allowing more people to get answers faster.

“If there’s an emergency, they get me in right away,” Julie said. “And even for regular visits, I never feel like I’m waiting too long. They make time for you because they care.”

Her advice to others? Don’t wait.

“You may not always get the answers you want, but you’ll get the answers you need. That’s better than not knowing.”
