Dr. Michael Gates is a neurologist specializing in movement disorders. He provides comprehensive care for patients with Parkinson’s disease, tremor, dystonia, and other movement disorders. His clinical interests also include botulinum toxin (Botox) treatments and deep brain stimulation (DBS) programming.

Dr. Gates chose to join the Minneapolis Clinic of Neurology because of its outstanding reputation for providing high-quality, patient-centered neurological care. He was drawn to the opportunity to work alongside experienced neurologists in a collaborative environment that values compassion, innovation, and excellence. He looks forward to making a meaningful difference in the lives of patients and their families.

His passion for movement disorders is deeply personal. After seeing the effects of stroke on his father and Parkinson’s disease on his grandfather, Dr. Gates developed a strong interest in caring for people with neurological conditions. These experiences inspired him throughout medical school, residency, and fellowship and continue to shape his compassionate approach to patient care. He is also excited by the rapid advances in movement disorders research and the growing treatment options available to patients.

Dr. Gates earned his medical degree from St. George’s University and completed his neurology residency at JFK University Medical Center in Edison, New Jersey. He has been board certified since 2025.

He is a member of the International Parkinson and Movement Disorder Society and the American Academy of Neurology.

Outside of work, Dr. Gates enjoys staying active through running, weightlifting, and swimming. He also enjoys fishing, spending time outdoors, and cooking whenever he has the opportunity.

His philosophy on healthy living is built on consistency. He believes prevention is the best medicine and encourages regular exercise, healthy nutrition, and sustainable habits to support both brain and overall health.
