Happy Retirement Dr. Birnbaum and Dr. Zwiebel!

Gary Birnbaum, M.D.Felix Zwiebel, M.D.

Both neurologists retired in December of 2016.  We thank them for their many years of exceptional neurologic care and wish them a most wonderful retirement!

Dr. Gary Birnbaum started at MCN March 1, 1999, and worked at our Golden Valley office as Medical Director of the Multiple Sclerosis Treatment and Research Center. Dr. Birnbaum graduated from Hobart College in Geneva, New York, with a Bachelor of Arts degree before attending Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland. He interned at New York Hospital – Cornell University Medical College, where he also completed his residency. He was Chief Resident in Neurology from 1969-1970.  Dr. Birnbaum held academic appointments at Cornell University Medical College from 1969-1979. After moving to Minnesota, he was Associate Professor of Neurology at the University of Minnesota Medical School from 1978-1987, and Professor of Neurology from 1987 – 1990. Dr. Birnbaum is highly respected for his vast contributions to research, primarily related to multiple sclerosis.

Dr. Felix Zwiebel started at MCN June 1, 1982, primarily specializing in the care of patients with Parkinson’s disease, at our office on the Methodist Hospital campus and then at our Edina office. He came to MCN after having worked as a neurologist at Park Nicollet Medical Center from 1977-1982. Dr. Zwiebel attended Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, where he obtained both his B.S. and M.D. degrees. He interned at Cleveland Metropolitan General Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio, where he also completed his residency in neurology. Dr. Zwiebel was chief resident in neuropathology there from 1974 to 1975, and then he was Head Neurology Consultant to the Special Board of Flight Surgeons at the Naval Aerospace Medical Institute in Pensacola, FL from 1975-1977.  Dr. Zweibel was involved in teaching activities during his career, serving as Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Neurology and also the Department of Family Practice and Community Health at the University of Minnesota.
